The secrets of social media hashtags!

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

Purpose

Hashtags are used to generate exposure in a post & allows the algorithm to place your post within a specific cyber community. Think that your target audience lives within these hashtag.

Using hashtags is super important to nurture your brand presence.

Pro Tip: Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags on posts and infinite on stories... Don't be shy and use them up! When creating your hashtag group you are going to use a mix of long & short tail hashtags for maximum results.

However, there is a secret formula social media gurus use... (Don't worry, I got you)

Short tail hashtags

These are common hashtags (#instagood #fashion)

The more generic your hashtags are, the least exposure your post will get. This is because there are lots of people tagging their post with the same #. Pushing yours wayyy down in the feed.

Long tail hashtags

These are specific hashtags (#fashionistainthemaking)

The more specific the hashtags, the least competition there is, allowing you to rise above other posts for a longer period of time. The audience living within these hashtags tend to be real & engaged followers looking for content of interest.

Formula

5-7 short tail #

  • Extremely popular #s only

  • This will activate activity.

  • 100,000 to 500,000

5-7 moderate #

  • make popular words plural

  • This will maintain activity

  • 10,000 to 100,000

5-10 long tail #

  • Extended words/sentences

  • Captivate organic engagement

  • < 10,000

(Create branded hashtags and add them to your posts!)
